H&A

Destroy the little myth of H&A

When buying diamonds, besides the 4Cs of diamonds, the most familiar one is "Hearts and Arrows", right? Whenever you hear the hearts and arrows, do you automatically think of a super top, sparkling diamond? However, did you know that hearts and arrows are not equal to top diamonds? So what about Hearts and Arrows? Let us dispel the little myths about "Hearts and Arrows" for you today!

What is H&A?

Eight Hearts and Eight Arrows is actually a kind of turner, also known as "Cupid turner". Under the condition of excellent symmetry of the diamond, looking down from the front of the diamond, you can see the shape of eight arrows; if you turn the diamond back and look at the bottom, you can see eight symmetrical heart patterns, which together are everyone The eight hearts and eight arrows said!

Is H&A a special diamond cut?

H&A is an optical phenomenon that occurs in round diamonds (there is also a round square diamond). When a 57-face standard round faceted diamond (that is, a well-known round diamond) is viewed with a cutting mirror, if the table surface is visible from the center There is a radial pattern of eight arrows. When the pavilion is upward, the pattern of eight hearts can be observed, and the tip of the heart is facing the center. This is the phenomenon of eight hearts and eight arrows. Therefore, the hearts and arrows are not a special cut, but the pattern effect presented by the cut grade of ordinary round diamonds reaching a certain standard.

Is owning H&A a Top Turner Diamond?

Generally speaking, if the diamond has three characteristics of good cut ratio, symmetry and polish, the hearts and arrows can be seen with the H&A observation instrument, but not every pattern is perfectly symmetrical. Even if the effect of eight hearts and eight arrows is achieved, the turner is still graded. However, in the GIA diamond appraisal report, there is no additional rating for Hearts and Arrows.

Isn't H&A the most perfect Cut?

Although Hearts and Arrows is a very ideal turning, it is actually an optical phenomenon presented by the cut grade of ordinary round diamonds reaching a certain standard. The most perfect turning work in the world is the Tokowski cut. In 1919, the Antwerp cutter divided the round diamond into 58 facets such as table top, kite face, star face, girdle face and pointed bottom through optical calculation; Small diamonds below 25 points have no culet and a total of 57 facets. Because the Tokowski cut can fully reflect the fire of the diamond, it is known as the most perfect cut in the world.

What does it mean to be a super top cut?

In order to achieve the standard of super-top lathes, in addition to having hearts and arrows with complete, symmetrical, consistent and clear hearts and arrows, it is also necessary to match the "ideal lathes". The ideal cut diamond pays attention to the ratio of each cutting angle of the diamond. Too much or too shallow depth will cause the diamond to leak light. When the angle ratio is properly adjusted, the light entering the diamond can achieve 100% total reflection. However, due to the factor of symmetry, not all ideal cut diamonds have hearts and arrows, so if a diamond can have "ideal cut" and "Cupid cut", it is one The turner is quite an excellent diamond!

Does it show on the GIA certificate?

The grading agencies IGI and HRD regard Hearts and Arrows as the "best cut". IGI even has a specific certificate for this. GIA does not recognize hearts and arrows as a grade component of the cut, because the presence of hearts and arrows does not guarantee the grade of the cut. However, GIA certificates sometimes have a note: "Laser Mark: H&A". This note on the GIA report simply indicates that the "H&A" mark was laser inscribed on the girdle of the diamond before it was graded by GIA. Neither the "H&A" laser engraving nor the corresponding note on the GIA report indicates that GIA observed a perfect hearts and arrows pattern on this particular diamond.

The diamond industry has not established a uniform standard for evaluating hearts and arrows diamonds. For consumers looking to purchase a Hearts & Arrows diamond cut, it is best to use an H&A viewing instrument to view the Hearts & Arrows image for yourself.
