When choosing a wedding ring, the color of the metal is often the first consideration.
If you like white metal, you can choose 18K white gold or platinum, both of which have high stability and are suitable for long-term wear and collection.
We are often asked "Which one is better between 18K white gold and platinum?"In fact, the answer is not black and white, because they all have their own characteristics. In this article, we simply share the characteristics of these two metals and their differences from 4 perspectives:
INGREDIENT
Platinum in English is Platinum, often referred to as PT or PT950. The meaning of 950 is the same as the above logic, which means that the metal is composed of 95% platinum and 5% other metals. Platinum is extremely pure, the particles are closely arranged, and it is heavier than 18K gold, so it is more textured.
Pure Platinum 990: Refers to containing not less than 990/1,000th of pure platinum, with the characters "PT990", "Platinum" or "Platinum" engraved on the jewelry.
Platinum 950: Refers to containing 950 thousandths of pure platinum, 5% of which is alloy, often used in inlaid jewelry, with the word "PT950" engraved on the jewelry.
Platinum 900: Refers to containing 900/1000th of pure platinum, 10% of which are alloys, often used in inlaid jewelry, with the word "PT900" engraved on the jewelry.
18K Gold: Also known as AU750, AU is the chemical symbol for gold. Refers to the metal consisting of 75% gold and 25% other metals. It is often used in inlaid jewelry, and the ornaments are engraved with "AU750" or "18K" characters.
COLOUR
Platinum is a naturally white metal, while the original color of 18K white gold is slightly gray. When used as a wedding ring material, it will be adjusted to silver-white through Rhodium Plating treatment. Electroplating refers to the use of a white metal called "rhodium" that is plated on the surface of 18K white gold to change its color. Because the color of electroplating fades over time, platinum is more durable than 18K white gold in terms of color retention.
PRICE
Platinum has less reserves than gold, is more difficult to mine, and is more difficult to use in jewelry making. Therefore, under normal circumstances, the price of a wedding ring made of platinum will be about 30% higher than that of 18K gold.
PLASTICITY
From the perspective of metal characteristics, platinum and platinum have their own advantages and disadvantages when used as wedding ring materials. Sometimes one of the metals may be better for a certain design. Therefore, the design of the wedding ring can provide guidance for selection. For example, platinum is a metal with extremely high plasticity. If the design of the wedding ring is relatively fine, the use of platinum can handle the details more finely, but when it is used for the design of square corners, platinum will wear faster and become rounded, so 18K Gold would be a better choice. In addition, because of the high plasticity of platinum, it is easier to scratch and lose its luster than 18K gold. In other words, the same feature can be an advantage or a disadvantage in two designs.
